Kaidan (怪談) is a Japanese movie directed by Hideo Nakata.
[edit] Plot
When a samurai kills a debt collector, the man curses the samurai and his family with his dying breath. Due to this curse the samurai kills his wife and commits suicide soon after. They leave behind one son which is raised by a servant of the family.
The baby, Skinkichi (Kikunosuke Onoe) eventually grows up and becomes a poor tobacco salesman and, in an ironic twist, he meets Toyoshiga (Hitomi Kuroki), the daughter of the debt collector killed by his samurai father a quarter of a century earlier. She now runs a school for singers in Edo and Shinkichi finds himself drawn to her beauty.
Shinkichi and Toyoshiga begin a romantic relationship and he takes a job as an assistant at her school. Toyoshiga is soon overwhelmed by jealousy, however, because her students are mostly young females and she can't handle Shinkichi being around them. He gets fed up with her irrational anger and decides to leave her, but not before he accidentally kills her in a struggle reminiscent of the one between his father and hers years earlier. He runs off with a student from the school, but cannot escape Toyoshiga's jealous ghost or his family.
