Matsunosuke Onoe

Matsunosuke Onoe (尾上松之助, Onoe Matsunosuke, Okayama, September 12, 1875 - September 11, 1926, Kyoto)^[1] was a Japanese actor and director. An ex-kabuki actor, Onoe played the lead role in early silent ninja and samurai films for Yokota and the new Nikkatsu studios. He became very popular in the mid-1910s and is considered to be the first Japanese film star. His nickname was "Medama no Matchan" or "Matsu of the Eyes".^[2]
