[edit] Video Game

In 1998, SquareSoft (currently known as Square Enix, Inc.) released a PlayStation game called Parasite Eve which takes place a few years after the events of the original novel. A New York City police officer named Aya Brea witnesses the spontaneous combustion and genetic mutations caused by mitochondria, but somehow is immune to these effects herself. She discovers she has some sort of extraordinary ability to control the mitochondria in her body and must use these newly-discovered powers to destroy the mitochondria queen, Eve. A Sequel was released in 1999, and a third game was announced in 2007.
