Plot summaryEdit

Near the end of the Edo period a destitute samurai named Seibei Iguchi leads the life of a low-level bureaucrat, working as a clerk in his clan's office. Because he returns home straight after work instead of going out at night to drink his co-workers tag him "Twilight Seibei". He has no choice in the matter, however, because the death of his wife left him solely responsible for the welfare of his senile mother and two young daughters.

One day Iguchi discovers his childhood friend Tomoe has left her abusive husband and returned home. The two spend some time together and after a while her ex-husband shows up to continue his abuse. Iguchi defends her and manages to defeat the man using only a wooden stick against a sword. After this incident Tomoe's brother suggests Iguchi marry Tomoe but he refuses, explaining that due to his poverty she wouldn't enjoy being married to him.

When Iguchi's clan hears of his combat prowess they assign him the task of killing Yogoemon, another samurai of an opposing clan. His clan offers him enough money to get him out of his current financial situation and he eventually agrees. Unfortunately Tomoe has already accepted another man's proposal of marriage and the samurai he's tasked to kill is poor like himself. Both of these discoveries make Iguchi wonder why he's going through with it in the first place, but his samurai honor won't let him back down now.
