Under The Carp Banner Written by: Michael Den Boer on March 12th, 2007
Theatrical Release Dates: Japan, 1992 Director: Kazuhiro Sano Cast: Akiko Tomonari, Kozo Ueda, Kanako Kishi, Taro Araki, Naoto Yoshimoto
DVD released: october 31st, 2006 Approximate running time: 55 minutes Aspect Ratio: 1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen Rating: NR Sound: Dolby Digital Stereo DVD Release: Artsmagic Region Coding: Region 1 NTSC Retail Price: $19.95
Two lovers steal a car and visit a relative who owns a spa resort. The owner of the resort has a son who suffered head trauma when he fell off the roof years ago and since the accident he has matured. The young boy has never seen the world outside of the village he lives and the two lovers take him to see the wonders of the big city. Will taking the young boy outside of his environment help him or will it only further damage his psyche?
Under the Carp Banner is more plot driven then most Roman Porno’s and the sex scenes feel more ruff around the edges and not as stylized. The two most disturbing sex scenes involve a homeless river man. In the first sex scene in the film we get to see to lovers go at it in their SUV and this scene is pretty stale outside of the moment of humor where a bum walks up and pleasure himself while watching them. Later in the film the same homeless river man gets to nail the wife of an impotent man. This scene is the best sex scene in the film and the one that is most representative of the Roman Porno genre.
Another interesting sex scene involves a very large cucumber. The film contains many odd ball characters with the strangest being a man who speaks in a language known as river people language and he chopped off his fingers because he wanted too have webbed fingers. Kazuhiro Sano direction is well done and he excels the most during scenes that are more social commentary driven and less about sex. The film despite only being fifty five minutes in length does have few moments where things come to a lull. Those who make it to the end with be rewarded with a violent and deeply profound ending that is sure to move everyone who sees it.
The DVD:
Under the Carp Banner is presented in an anamorphic widescreen that preserves the films original aspect ratio. Colors look faithfully reproduced and details look sharp through out. Overall the transfer for this release is on par with Artsmagic’s other Roman Porno releases.
This release comes with one audio option a Japanese language track which is presented in a Dolby Digital Stereo. There are no problems with distortion or any other sound defects and the dialog is clear and easy to follow. Removable English sub titles have been include that are easy to follow and understand.
Extras include bios for Kazuhiro Sano, Kanako Kishi and Taro Araki. Other extras include a twenty six minute interview with director Kazuhiro Sano who discusses humor/satire in his films, River Spirit language and his thoughts on the film Under a Carp Banner. Rounding out the extras is an audio commentary with film critic Jasper Sharp who discusses the films of Kazuhiro Sano, censorship in Japanese cinema and Roman Porno.
Under the carp Banner is more of a social satire and fans of Roman Porno might be let down by its lack of sleaze. Under the Carp Banner gets a solid DVD release from Artsmagic.

Rafureshia (ラフレシア) aka Slut Wife: While Husband's Away (すけべ妻 夫の留守に Sukebe-zuma: Otto no Rusu ni) and Wife in Heat: While Husband Is Away [3] is a 1995 Japanese pink film directed by Hisayasu Satou. It won the award for Ninth Best Film at the Pink Grand Prix ceremony.[4]
Synopsis

Plot Synopsis by Robert Firsching
This episodic pinku-eiga film from cult director Hisayasu Sato explores the sexual adventures of three women with numerous softcore glimpses into their bedroom adventures. A housewife who prowls for new men each night, the private sex club run by her mother-in-law, and the exploits of a country girl adjusting to the more liberal atmosphere of Tokyo are the hooks upon which Sato hangs his usual observations of urban sin and alienation. Granted, the tone is somewhat lighter than in his notorious S&M films, but the message is none the cheerier for being framed with humor. Kinaki stars with Yumi Yoshiyuki, Kiyomi Ito, and Koichi Imaizumi.

An interlocking tale of three women and their search for sexuality, penned by actor-turned-scripter Taketoshi Watari: (1) a young woman, born and raised in the country, moves to Tokyo; (2) a suburban wife goes out every night sniffing around for new men; (3) her mother-in-law runs a secret orgy club which caters to wealthy businessmen and politicians. Unique characters in a darkly humorous story.

DVD released: october 31st, 2006 Approximate running time: 63 minutes Aspect Ratio: 1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen Rating: NR Sound: Dolby Digital Stereo DVD Release: Artsmagic Region Coding: Region 1 NTSC Retail Price: $19.95
Alisa is young woman who has never seen the outside world outside of the remote island that she lives on with her incestuous father. Wanting to break free from her perverted father Alisa jumps into the ocean and swims to shore where she is discovered by a trio of homeless men who think she is a mermaid. Harumi and her husband Yoshio are having problems conceiving a child and to make matters worse they live her oversexed mother who can’t keep her hands off of Yoshio.
Unknown to Harumi her mother is a madam who has recently employed Alisa who was rescued from the clutches of three horny homeless men before they had there way with her. Alisa soon turns of her new employer taking off with a bag full of money and video tape that could be incriminating in the wrong hands. On the run Alisa hooks up with Harumi who is looking to turn a few tricks herself. Alisa and Harumi decide to run away together in search of a place where the Rafureshia flower grows. Will Alisa’s per perverted father or Harumi’s mother and her Yakuza sidekick find them before they find Rafureshia?
Rafureshia is not an easy film to describe and writing the above synopsis of the plot was not an easy task since the plot is all over the place and lacks any linear structure. Despite the chaotic structure of the story the film moves along quickly with never a moment where the film drags. Having previously seen director Hisayasu Sato’s Love – Zero + Infinity and Survey Map of a Paradise Lost I had good idea of what to expect from him. Rafureshia is Sato at his craziest as he pushes everything little thing in the film to end of good taste.
From the films opening moments where father treats Alisa as a sex slave or later in the film when Harumi’s husband Yoshio gets amnesia and thinks that he is a woman. Alisa’s father looking for her replacement falls in love with Yoshio who is dressed in drag. One of the most memorable moments is when Alisa chases around a man in a diaper with a chainsaw. The sex scenes are not exactly erotic since in most of them one of the participants always seems to be uninterested and acts lifeless. Ultimately Rafureshia is one of most entertaining and interesting Pinku films that I have seen to date.
The DVD:
Rafureshia is presented in an anamorphic widescreen that preserves the films original aspect ratio. Colors and flesh tones are faithfully reproduced. The source material sued is in great shape and besides some noticeable cigarette burns there is no major print damage.
This release comes with one audio option a Japanese language track which is presented in a Dolby Digital Stereo. The dialog, music and effects sound evenly balanced and robust. There are no problems with hiss, distortion or any other sound defects. Removable English sub titles have been include that are easy to follow and understand.
Extras include bios for Hisayasu Sato, Koichi Imaizumi, Kinako, Kiyomi Ito and Yumi Yoshiyuki. Other extras include a seventeen minute interview with director Hisayasu Sato who discusses working with screenwriter Taketoshi Watari, location shooting, Manga, influences and working on the film Rafureshia. Rounding out the extras is an audio commentary with film critic Jasper Sharp who discusses the films of Hisayasu Sato, Pinku Films, Gay Pinku cinema, and Sato changing up his direction style for Rafureshia.
Rafureshia is the most whacked out Pinku Film currently available on DVD in America. Once again another first rate DVD release from Artsmagic.

Survey Map of a Paradise Lost is one of director Hisayasu Sato’s most violent films with uncompressing mixture of violence towards woman which often occurs while they are restrained during sexual acts. One scene that drives the sadism which is present in this film home occurs when Kihara electrocutes one of his lovers on her private parts. Also another strong moment occurs when he uses a cola bottle on a woman’s vagina. The Blocking of sex scenes to cover up all the naughty bits is an art form in of its self.
Survey Map of a Paradise Lost is a complex story and one of best plots ever used in any Pink film. Director Hisayasu Sato perfectly mixes the sex scenes with the murder mystery which drives the main plot. Also just like all great thrillers this one is filled with many red herrings which keep the killers real motives secret tell the final moments of the film. The films ending is almost a bit too ambiguous as it leaves to many things left unresolved? The acting is above what one would expect while watching a Pink film with the stand out performance being that of Kiyomi Ito that plays the murdered mans wife. Overall Survey Map of a Paradise Lost is reminiscent of Brian De Palma at his sleaziest and the visual style of a Hitchcock thriller.
The DVD:
Artsmagic presents Survey Map of a Paradise Lost in its original full frame aspect ratio. The source material used for this transfer looks better then their transfer for Love – Zero + Infinity. The source material used looks nearly flawless. There are is no noticeable print damage. Colors look nicely saturated and black levels look strong with details looking razor sharp through out. A brief comment on the films aspect ratio is that I noticed that the end credits are letterboxed while the rest of the film is not. The film doesn’t look cramped outside of few minor instances where the image looks just a little too tight. Overall the framing of the image looks correct despite these minor instances.
This release comes with one audio option the films original Japanese language track which is presented in a Dolby Digital stereo. There are no problems with hiss, distortion or any other audio defects. Overall the audio sounds full and evenly balanced. Removable English subtitles that are easy to read and follow have been included.
Extras for this release include bios for Hisayasu Sato, Yutaka Ikejima, Toru Nakane, Shun Sato, Rio Yamagawa, Kiyomi Ito and Kazuhiro Sano. Other extras include a thirty minute interview with Hisayasu Sato who discusses pink movies, western vs. Japanese cinema, the influence of Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Conversation” and making the film Survey Map of a Paradise Lost. The final extra for this release comes in the form of an audio commentary track with Midnight Eye’s Jasper Sharp who provides an insightful track that is sure to enhance fans knowledge about Pink films.
Survey Map of a Paradise Lost is not only one of the best examples of a Pink film it is also director Hisayasu Sato’s best film to date. Artsmagic adds another classic Pink film to their shocking Pink collection, highly recommended.

Hisayasu Sato, 1988
Runtime: 66 min.
Format: DVD
Hisayasu Sato's brilliant Survey Map of a Paradise Lost is a truly unique film. It approaches many of the themes that run rampant through Sato's work of the time (mans relationship with technology, alienation, emptiness, and sexual disorder) in a method which is completely new, completely different from anything that had been put on celluloid before.
Nukada is a journalist working on a story about "The Banana Club," a telephone sex club in which (presumably) customers call a line and are connected to a woman for phone sex or to arrange a meeting for actual sex. Nukada's coworker Koto knows a girl name Midori, who he offers to set up an interview with for Nukada. The two meet for an interview one day, but before the interview can get under way, a man pulls up in a car, voices how he had an appointment with Midori first, pulls her into the car, and drives off.
The man is Kihara, a twenty-nine year old who works at NDT, a large phone company. He seems to have some sort of affinity for Midori, and also somehow always ends up connecting to her through the phone club. The sex he has with Midori (and for that fact, his wife) is very rough. The woman is tied up and often blood play is involved. After a rather strenuous sex session, Kihara and Midori go for a walk, ending up on top of a tall building. Midori tells a story about a pop star that killed herself of a building, and how she saw it while she was working in a deli. She remarks how she wants to fall, someday.
Later, Kihara attempts to have sex with his wife. She has developed some sort of psychosomatic itch that she gets when she doesn't take a copious amount of unidentified pills. Her itch begins while they're having sex, but Kihara refuses to let her take the pills. He ties her up and video tapes her as she wriggles around trying to scratch herself. He seems to get some of perverse pleasure out of it, while it pushes his wife over the edge.
Some time later, Kihara picks up Midori again. Against Midori's wishes, Kihara once again brings out the video camera. Midori argues with Kihara, and eventually he pulls a knife out. Midori gets a hold of the knife, and slashes his arm. She scrambles to the bathroom, her feet tied together. Kihara follows with the video camera, grinning. Midori, still clutching the knife, climbs into the full bathtub. Kihara sets the camera tripod down, aiming at the tub, and lunges at Midori. The knife plunges into his chest, killing him. The incident shows up in the news, and Midori is more or less getting out of the crime by calling it an act of self defense, which the video tape more or less proves. Nukada, aware of the incident, is thrilled when his coworker (the same one who introduced him to Midori) tells him about the existence of the video tape, and then manages to get him a copy. While watching the video tape he notices a few frames of video at the beginning that are not from the night in the love hotel. After freezing the frames Nukada discovers that it is Midori and Kihara's wife talking on top of a roof.
Within the last fifteen minutes of the movie, much is revealed that comes as a shock to the viewer, without revealing the main "punch" of the ending, it's safe to point out that in reality, Kihara was suicidal, but unable to kill himself. He more or less manipulated his wife and Midori into the situation where he knew he could die, and it would simply appear to be an act of self defense from Midori. But the real shock is yet to come.
Sato once again proves he is a master of the subversive, pushing the sex scenes in this film to what is basically the hardest point he could within the context of the film. The extreme violence of the sex scenes fully expand upon the state that Kihara himself is in, and Midori's reactions are perfectly consistent within what is revealed to be her outlook on life. Sato also handles his fascination of the interaction with technology greatly, with key elements playing out on TV and monitors, slowly being followed by a pan to the actual action; the double view points out to us, as viewers to a) think about our reality versus the reality of the film and b) create a divide in the motivations and actions of the characters themselves in the film. In a brilliant move by Sato, the ultimate reality of the characters, at the end of the film, is revealed through a video cassette.
The revelation of Kihara's suicidal intentions are also linked to technology; Kihara says he has compiled all of his life's data into a computer program, and the program has chosen suicide as the most reasonable and preferable death. This method, aside from commenting on the technology issue, also touches on Kihara's isolation; he puts more faith into a machine than he does in any of his interpersonal relationships (of course; the only relationships we are exposed to are those of Kihara to his wife, Midori, and briefly to Nukada). Midori also reveals an intense sort of desperation that Sato seems to find in many young characters in his films. She was witness to a pop stars suicide and becomes more or less obsessed with the details and the actual situation (the act of falling, and hitting the ground) itself.
All in all, Survey Map of a Paradise Lost is a very powerful film. It's social commentary and artistic achievements (Sato's world view has always been ahead of it's time) are vast. If one can view sadomasochistic sex not as exploitive titillation and more of a metaphor of the desperation for a final pleasure, then the film is wholly relevant and a great way to spend sixty minutes.
