When the Last Sword Is Drawn (壬生義士伝 Mibu Gishi Den) is a 2003 Japanese film directed by Yojiro Takita.

[edit] Plot summary

In the late Edo period Kanichiro Yoshimura joins the Shinsegumi clan as a means of providing for his impoverished family. Fellow samurai Hajime Saito is offended that anyone would equate the samurai lifestyle to a job taken up for the sole purpose of earning money. Because of this, he challenges Yoshimura to a duel, only to be defeated rather handedly. Yoshimura represents a new generation used to having to adapt to survive. Saito represents the old guard, depending on tradition and samurai code in an era when those ideals are slowly fading.
